American Eagle Revamps Back-to-School Strategy to Target Gen Z

American Eagle is shaking up its traditional back-to-school marketing playbook in an effort to reach a highly fragmented Gen Z audience. Chief Marketing Officer Craig Brommers detailed the retailer's extensive marketing campaign for this crucial shopping season. The campaign kicks off just days after global brand ambassador Lamine Yamal and his team won World Cup gold, positioning the athlete at the center of the brand's promotional efforts.[1][3]

To effectively connect with different segments of the Gen Z demographic, American Eagle is leaning on three brand ambassadors, including Yamal, to target three distinct subcultures. The retailer is also turning to social media trends and college campus life, specifically leveraging the 'RushTok' phenomenon by filling sorority houses with denim to drive engagement.[1][2]

In addition to its digital and campus outreach, American Eagle is focusing on physical retail locations to boost customer acquisition and denim sales. The brand is sending creators directly into malls and selling limited-edition jeans in its physical stores, aiming to turn the annual back-to-school shopping frenzy into a powerful sales engine.[2]
