Cia – Italian Farmers Assembly: 51% of consumers buy only Made in Italy, but almost half have already cut back on spending
A survey from the Cia-Italian Farmers Assembly reveals that origin, price, and seasonality are the top factors for Italian food shoppers, even as nearly half reduce their spending.

For more than half of Italians, the absolute first criterion when purchasing food is the domestic origin of the product. According to a new survey conducted by the Research Department of the Cia-Italian Farmers Assembly, 51 percent of consumers identify "Made in Italy" as the main determining factor for their grocery shopping. This strong preference for national food remains the leading driver for the majority of the population.[1][2]
However, this dedication to domestic products comes at a time of financial restraint for many households. The Cia-Italian Farmers Assembly reports that while 51 percent of consumers buy exclusively Italian-made goods, almost half of all consumers have already cut back on their overall spending.[1][2]
The survey data reveals a distinct three-tier hierarchy that dictates consumer choices at the grocery store, consisting of origin, price, and seasonality. Furthermore, the Research Department found a notable generational divide in these purchasing habits, indicating that young people and older consumers experience national food in very different ways.[1][2]
