Gold Coast to Build Flying Taxi Vertiports in Deal With Skyports
The Gold Coast has reached an agreement to develop specialized landing hubs for flying taxis on council land, marking a shift toward advanced air mobility in the region
The Gold Coast has officially joined the global race to implement flying taxi technology through a new strategic partnership with infrastructure developer Skyports. Under the terms of the deal, the city will facilitate the construction of vertiports on land owned by the local council. These specialized facilities are designed to serve as takeoff and landing hubs for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, representing a significant step toward integrating advanced air mobility into the city's transport network.[1][2][3][4]
Mayor Tom Tate emphasized that the arrival of flying taxis is no longer science fiction as the city begins planning for these futuristic transport hubs. However, the mayor maintained a cautious stance regarding the transition to fully autonomous flight. Tate indicated that while he supports the development of the infrastructure on council land, he is not yet ready to hand over the controls of these vehicles to robotic systems, suggesting a preference for human-piloted operations during the initial stages of the rollout.[1][2][3][4]
