May Day Protests Target Rising Energy Costs and Middle East Conflict
Trade unions and activists worldwide held rallies to demand higher wages and protest the economic impact of the war in the Middle East

Activists and labor organizations worldwide marked May Day on Friday with a series of rallies and street protests. These demonstrations focused on demands for peace, higher wages, and improved working conditions as global workers grapple with the economic consequences of conflict. A primary concern cited by participants is the sharp rise in energy costs, which has been linked to the ongoing war in the Middle East involving Iran.[1][2]
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) emerged as a prominent voice during the demonstrations, representing 93 different trade union organizations across 41 European countries. In a formal statement, the confederation asserted that working people are unwilling to pay the price for the military actions led by Donald Trump. The group argued that the current geopolitical climate is directly threatening the livelihoods of employees across the continent.[1][2]
Organizers of the rallies stated that the widespread demonstrations are intended to show that workers will not stand by while their jobs and living standards are eroded. By taking to the streets, the unions aim to pressure leaders to address the financial strain placed on households. The ETUC emphasized that the rallies serve as a collective refusal to accept the destruction of economic stability due to international warfare.[1][2]
