NBM plc commits K317 Million for Malamulo Hospital power project
National Bank of Malawi plc has signed an agreement to fund half of a micro-grid power project at Malamulo Mission Hospital to address persistent energy challenges

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has formalized a partnership with Malamulo Mission Hospital through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement secures a commitment of K317 million from the bank to facilitate the development of a micro-grid power project at the Thyolo-based facility. The funding provided by NBM plc covers 50 percent of the total costs associated with the initiative, marking a major step toward energy independence for the mission hospital.[1][2]
The project is a direct response to several ongoing utility issues that have compromised the hospital's ability to provide consistent medical care. For an extended period, the facility has struggled with frequent power outages and unpredictable voltage fluctuations. These electrical instabilities pose a risk to medical equipment and daily operations, necessitating a more reliable and localized power solution like the proposed micro-grid system.[1][2]
In addition to grid-related failures, the hospital has also been impacted by fuel shortages, which often limit the effectiveness of traditional backup power sources. By investing in this micro-grid project, NBM plc and Malamulo Mission Hospital aim to create a more resilient energy infrastructure. This move is expected to safeguard healthcare services against external energy shocks and ensure that the community in Thyolo receives uninterrupted medical attention.[1][2]
