Pro-Russian Accounts Spread Fake AI Images Blaming Ukraine for Kyiv Cathedral Fire
Pro-Kremlin social media users shared AI-generated images as "proof" that Ukraine was behind a strike and fire at the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastic complex.

During the night of June 14 to June 15, a strike hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a prominent Orthodox monastic complex in Kyiv that is officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The strike resulted in a fire at the Dormition Cathedral, which is located within the historic complex. In the aftermath of the attack, pro-Kremlin social media accounts began actively spreading claims that blamed Ukraine for the strike and the resulting damage to the cathedral.[1][2]
To support their allegations, these pro-Russian accounts shared images online that they claimed served as proof of Ukrainian responsibility for the burning of the Kyiv cathedral. However, these claims have been exposed as false. Investigations into the shared visual evidence revealed that the images presented as proof were not authentic photographs, but were instead entirely generated by artificial intelligence.[1]
