St. Edith Stein: Saint of the Day for Sunday, August 09, 2026
Edith Stein, a Jewish-born philosopher who converted to Catholicism and joined the Cologne Carmel, is remembered as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, originally born as Edith Stein, is commemorated as the Catholic Church's official Saint of the Day for Sunday, August 9, 2026. Born in 1891 in Breslau, Poland, she grew up as the youngest child in a large Jewish family. From an early age and throughout her academic career, she distinguished herself as an outstanding student with remarkable intellectual abilities.[2]
Stein became exceptionally well versed in the field of philosophy, developing a particular scholarly interest in phenomenology. Her philosophical inquiries and spiritual search eventually led her to become interested in the Catholic faith. In 1922, her journey culminated in her baptism at the Cathedral Church located in Cologne, Germany.[2]
Eleven years after receiving her baptism in Cologne, Stein entered the Cologne Carmel to pursue her religious life. Remembered formally as a virgin and martyr, her legacy as a scholar and Carmelite nun continues to be remembered on her feast day. In addition to her religious commemoration, August 9, 2026, is also recognized as National Hand Holding Day.[1][2]
