Three Dead on Atlantic Cruise Ship in Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak
The World Health Organization reports three deaths among six ill passengers on a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic, with at least one case of hantavirus confirmed

Three people have died aboard a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean following an outbreak that includes a confirmed case of hantavirus, according to a statement released by the World Health Organization on Sunday. The fatalities have raised significant international concerns regarding the emergence of rare but potentially severe infections in the isolated environment of a vessel at sea.[1][2]
According to reports from the WHO, a total of six passengers fell ill during the transatlantic voyage. While three of those individuals have died, one of the remaining patients is currently being treated in an intensive care unit. The health organization is tracking the suspected rodent-transmitted virus as it impacts the passengers and crew during the crossing.[1][2]
The World Health Organization characterized the situation as a rare but potentially severe infection occurring at sea. Hantaviruses are typically identified as rodent-transmitted viruses, and the confirmation of at least one case on the ship has prompted a closer look at health risks during international travel. The outbreak has already claimed the lives of half of the six passengers known to be infected, with one survivor currently requiring intensive care.[1][2]
