Two in Five Americans Believe Stock Market Only Benefits the Top 1%
A new Harris Poll reveals widespread misconceptions among Americans regarding the relationship between the stock market and the broader economy

A new Harris Poll conducted exclusively for The Guardian has revealed that two in five Americans believe the stock market is not for them and only benefits the top 1%. The survey, which specifically investigated investing habits and general knowledge about the economy, found that a similar share of Americans hold incorrect assumptions about the relationship between the stock market and the wider economy.[1][2]
Among the key findings of the poll, nearly 40% of the respondents did not know that the economy and the stock market are not the same thing. Furthermore, the survey found that two-thirds of Americans incorrectly believed that a growing stock market means the overall economy is growing, highlighting a common misunderstanding about how these two economic elements interact.[1]
The survey was conducted online by the Harris Poll over a three-day period from July 9 to July 11. It was administered to a nationally representative sample of 2,154 US adults to gather insights into their investing habits and their overall knowledge about the economy, revealing significant assumptions about the financial system.[1]
