Network TV Shows Signs of Life Heading Into 2026-27 Season
Major broadcasters are increasing their scripted lineups for the upcoming season to support streaming platforms after a year of heavy cancellations

The landscape of network television is showing signs of recovery as broadcasters prepare for the 2026-27 season. This shift follows a period of significant contraction a year ago, when the industry saw a total of 20 shows canceled across the major networks. NBC led these cuts by canceling five scripted series in a single day, and later a sixth, largely to clear its schedule for primetime NBA games.[1]
Other major networks also participated in the heavy volume of cancellations last year. Both Fox and CBS axed six shows each, a figure that included at least one series end that had been pre-announced. Meanwhile, ABC dropped two shows from its lineup. These reductions reflected a broader trend of tightening schedules and shifting priorities among the big four broadcasters during the previous cycle.[1]
Looking ahead to the 2026-27 season, the outlook for scripted television has improved significantly. Each of the big four networks is slated to have more scripted shows on their schedules than in the previous year. This resurgence is attributed to the networks' continued efforts to fuel their respective streaming partners with new content, ensuring a steady pipeline of programming for both traditional and digital audiences.[1][2]
