Over 50,000 Evacuated in California as Orange County Chemical Leak Efforts Shift
Governor Gavin Newsom declared an emergency after a chemical storage tank leak forced tens of thousands to evacuate, with officials shifting their strategy to contain the hazardous substance

More than 50,000 people in southern California remain evacuated from their homes following a chemical leak from a storage tank in Orange County. The scale of the incident prompted California Governor Gavin Newsom to issue an emergency proclamation. Local officials and emergency responders have been working to manage the situation, which has disrupted tens of thousands of residents in the southern part of the state.[1][2]
The evacuation orders were initially issued on Friday, forcing approximately 40,000 residents to flee their homes in the southern part of the state. The situation developed further on Saturday when firefighters monitoring the storage tank recorded a temperature increase in the hazardous substance. The temperature of the chemical rose from 25°C to 32°C, presenting ongoing challenges for the emergency crews on the scene.[1]
Officials reported that efforts to stop the Orange County chemical leak have taken a new trajectory. The emergency proclamation from Governor Newsom remains in effect as authorities continue their response to the hazardous leak, with more than 50,000 residents still evacuated from their homes as they wait for the area to be declared safe.[2]
