Scarlett Johansson on Going Big and Finding the “Chutzpah” in Starry Cannes Drama ‘Paper Tiger’
Director James Gray discusses his long-standing desire to work with Scarlett Johansson on his latest complex family portrait, which recently debuted at the Cannes Film Festival

Director James Gray recently revealed that he was initially certain Scarlett Johansson would decline a role in his latest film, Paper Tiger. Gray stated that he had been obsessed with the idea of working with the actress for several years but doubted she had any interest in collaborating with him on any level. Despite his reservations, the Oscar-nominated actress joined the project, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.[1]
The film is characterized as a complex family portrait that required Johansson to undergo a significant transformation. During the production, Gray encouraged Johansson to take risks with her performance, though he occasionally had to provide specific direction to modulate her energy. He recalled telling her at times that her portrayal was becoming too much, jokingly reminding her that her character was not meant to be a yenta from Brownsville.[2]
Johansson's approach to the role involved finding the chutzpah necessary to portray the character's depth. The collaboration marks a significant milestone for Gray, who had attempted to cast Johansson in multiple previous projects without her knowledge. The resulting drama has drawn attention for its starry cast and the creative risks taken by its lead actress as she navigated the film's complex emotional landscape.[1][2]
