US strike on alleged drug boat kills 2 in eastern Pacific
The U.S. military announced a deadly strike on a vessel suspected of drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific, marking the latest in a series of lethal counter-narcotics operations
The United States military announced on Friday that it conducted a strike against a vessel suspected of transporting illegal drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean. According to officials, the operation resulted in the deaths of two individuals on board the boat. The U.S. Southern Command confirmed the engagement through a social media post, which featured video footage showing the destruction of the small craft during the mission.[1][2]
General Francis L. Donovan, acting under the authority of the U.S. Southern Command, directed the strike through Joint Task Force Southern Spear. This specialized unit is dedicated to counter-narcotics operations and is responsible for monitoring and intercepting maritime traffic believed to be part of international narco-trafficking networks. The military maintains that these strikes are necessary to disrupt the flow of illicit substances.[1]
This engagement represents the latest in a series of lethal actions taken by the U.S. military against suspected smuggling vessels in recent months. Since September, the ongoing campaign in the eastern Pacific has led to the deaths of at least 178 people. These operations have drawn attention to the increasing use of kinetic force by Joint Task Force Southern Spear in its efforts to combat drug trafficking in international waters.[1]
